Wonder herb is praised for benefiting our health in more ways than you might think
You would be forgiven for thinking that rosemary is only useful for jazzing up your Sunday roast. The truth is, this Mediterranean evergreen shrub is a powerhouse of antioxidants and has been widely used for deodorising body perfumes, health-boosting teas, ointments and medicines for years.
Its high content of calcium, vitamin B-6, vitamin A, thiamine, manganese and folate mean that whether you dry it, crush it, distil it in to oil or chop it up in your food, rosemary does you a world of good in more ways than one. Known to aid concentration and brain function since the ancient times, in modern day medicine its major benefit is to boost the immune system. Scientists have been able to demonstrate that rosemary can actually help to damage the cell walls of bacteria and lab studies have consistently shown that its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds are highly effective at neutralising harmful free radicals, both in our bodies and as odour molecules in the air.
But what does rosemary smell like?
We’re all familiar with that rich and heady scent which is so popular in Mediterranean and
British cuisine - it seems like a no-brainer, right? Well not exactly. When the essential oil is steam distilled from rosemary leaves the scent is pure and clean with some subtle differences from the scent you might associate with a Greek taverna.
We would describe the fragrance it as fresh but earthy with a slight medicinal note. On its own it wouldn’t make for a particularly pleasant home fragrance, but when used to support and back-up other more floral or zesty scents it rounds out the fragrance profile and really balances the overall scent.
At DOG-ABOUT-TOWN we use a really high quality rosemary essential oil in our ROSES AT THE GRAND HOTEL and WALKING IN VINEYARDS fragrances. This, along with the other essential oils and fragrances we use, creates a product that not only smells amazing but harnesses nature and man-made perfumes to neutralise and cover household odours.
